Brachfeld, Sylvain

Sylvain Brachfeld was born in Antwerp in 1932. During the German occupation of Belgium, he was hidden in the orphanage of the Soeurs de la Charité de St. Vincent de Paul in Verviers. He is a Holocaust historian, author and journalist. Sylvain Brachfeld started his career as a diamond cutter (1950-1989). From the early 1960s he became involved in journalism, writing for the Volksgazet (1967-1974), the Belga press agency (1970-1974), as a correspondent in Israel for De Nieuwe Gazet (1974-1993) and the Evangelische Omroep Hilversum (1979) and for Jewish periodicals and magazines such as the Belgian Israelite Weekblad (1962-2000), Tribune-Juive-T.J. Hebdo, Le Journal d'Israel and others. In addition, Brachfeld has written many historical and popular works about the Jewish community in Belgium and the rescue of Jewish children during the Holocaust. He is active in many Jewish associations in Belgium and Israel including the Club der Jonge Talenten (1960-1962), the Consistoire central israélite de Belgique, B'nai B'rith (1963-1968), and the Association of Former Belgians in Israel. He has amassed an impressive collection of archival material and documentation about the Jewish communities in Antwerp including oral histories. Sylvain Brachfeld was awarded the Knight in the Order of Leopold in 1993 for his work. The collection includes audio oral history interviews with Belgian Holocaust survivors and members of his family. Many of the interviews were conducted in cooperation with the Joods Museum van Deportatie en Verzet in Michelen. The collection also contains approximately 12 videos including ceremonies, reunions and interviews with Brachfeld.

The collection of Sylvain Brachfeld contains many uncataloged materials and catalogued audio oral history interviews with Belgian Holocaust survivors and members of his family. Many of the interviews were conducted in cooperation with the Joods Museum van Deportatie en Verzet in Michelen. The collection also contains approximately 12 videos including ceremonies, reunions and interviews with Brachfeld.
