דב לוין (1925 קובנה– 2016 ירושלים) היה היסטוריון ישראלי שהתמחה בחקר תולדות יהודי ליטא וארצות הבלטיות האחרות בתקופת השואה. לוין למד בצעירותו בגימנסיה העברית ע"ש שוואבה בקובנה (עד לסגירתה ב-1940 על ידי השלטונות הסובייטים), וב-1941 סיים את לימודיו בבית הספר היידי ע"ש שלום עליכם. הוא היה חבר בתנועת הנוער היהודי הסוציאליסטי-ציוני "השומר הצעיר." לאחר כיבוש ליטא על ידי הנאצים דב לוין שהה בגטו קובנה יחד עם אביו, אמו ואחותו התאומה. אף אחד ממשפחתו לא שרד. בגטו הוא הצטרף לארגון ציוני מחתרתי, ולאחר מכן הצטרף לפרטיזנים ביערות באזור וילנה. ב-1945 עלה לארץ ישראל כמעפיל. נרשם ללימודים באוניברסיטה העברית, לחם במלחמת השחרור, ועבד כעובד סוציאלי. ב-1971 דב לוין סיים לימודי דוקטור בהיסטוריה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, היה עמית פולברייט באוניברסיטת שיקגו, וניהל את המדור לתיעוד בעל פה במכון ליהדות זמננו ע"ש אברהם הרמן באוניברסיטה העברית. בין ספריו ומאמריו הרבים של פרופ' דב לוין ניתן לציין את ספרו לוחמים ועומדים על נפשם: מלחמת יהודי ליטא בנאצים 1945-1941 (1974), אשר זכה בפרס יצחק שדה לספרות צבאית. האוסף הפרטי של דב לוין כולל התכתבות הענפה מתקופות חייו שונות בליטא ובישראל. יש בו גם ראיונות רבים שערך, קטעי עיתונות, כרטסות שהכין, תצלומים נדירים מתקופת השואה, צילומי מקורות היסטוריים מהשואה. האוסף מכיל אף מאמרים שונים על היהודים בארצות הבלטיות ובברית המועצות בתקופת השואה, מאמריו הרבים של דב לוין, טיוטות של ספריו ועבודותיו. בנוסף, האוסף כולל מאמרים אודות דב לוין, וחומרים הקשורים לפעילותו הציבורית באיגוד יוצאי ליטא בישראל. האוסף אינו רשום במלואו (נכון ל-2021) --

The collection contains: Dov Levin’s correspondence; copies of historical materials on the Holocaust in the Baltics States and Soviet Union including rare photographs; press clippings; index cards; Levin’s numerous books, articles and drafts of his works and lectures; questionnaires and interviews he conducted with Jewish fighters and Holocaust survivors; articles about Dov Levin; and records relating to his public activities in the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel. The correspondence consists of personal letters he sent at various times of his life in Lithuania and Israel, correspondence with different institutions, and with researchers including harsh correspondence, with Holocaust deniers, private individuals and public bodies, in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia engaged in the rehabilitation of Nazi collaborators. For example, the collection includes Levin's correspondence with Andrew Ezergailis, who is a historian of the Holocaust in Latvia. Among the institutions with which Levin corresponded was, for example, the Vilnius University. Copies of historical sources about the Holocaust include, for example, decisions regarding the closure of Jewish businesses in Latvia, a report in Russian by a commission of inquiry into the murders in Vilnius at the beginning of the war, Kaunas ghetto police’ protocols, circulars and orders. Materials regarding activities in the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel include, for example, minutes of the association’s committees and minutes of the association board meetings from 1993-2002.

The collection of the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel contains copies of letters sent by the Levin family to relatives in Israel before and after the Holocaust (A37/69.5), a copy of a letter sent by rabbi Shlomo Levinger (Great-grandfather of Dov Levin) in 1931 (A37/69.6), photos from Dov Levin's archive, and more. In addition, Dov Levin transferred the archive of his books and articles to the Yad Vashem Library in 2009.

תקציר ביוגרפי Dov Levin was born in 1925 in Kaunas (Lithuania). He studied at the Svabes Hebrew Gymnasium in Kaunas, that was connected with the Tarbut educational network. After its closure, in 1940 by the Soviets, he continued his studies in the Sholem Aleichem Yiddish School. From the age of twelve, Levin was a member of the Hashomer Hatzair Socialist-Zionist Jewish youth movement. Following the Nazi occupation of Lithuania he was interned in the Kaunas Ghetto together with his father, mother, and twin sister, none of whom survived. In the ghetto he joined the underground Zionist organization, and joined the partisans in Vilnius area forests in 1944. In the summer of 1944, he was recruited by the Soviets to secretly find collaborators with the Nazi regime. He also helped Jews escape across Soviet borders to Eretz Israel. He immigrated to Eretz Israel at the end of 1945. He fought in the War of Independence, and was one of the soldier guards on the Mt. Scopus enclave after the war. After graduating from the Hebrew University, he worked as a social worker. In the 1950s he began to interview and record Jewish fighters against the Nazis and Holocaust survivors. In 1971, Dov Levin received his PhD in history from the Hebrew University. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Chicago and taught at the Hebrew University. He was one of the founders and director of the Oral History Division at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University. Among Prof. Dov Levin's many published books and articles is Fighting Back: Lithuanian Jewry's Armed Resistance to the Nazis 1941-1945 (1985), for which he was awarded the Yitzhak Sadeh Prize in Military History. Since the 1990s, he strongly opposed the policy of "rehabilitation" of Nazi collaborators, the Baltic countries adopted shortly after declaring their independence. He died in Jerusalem in 2016.
