זלמן ברכות (ברוכס) (1886 בלרוס - 1977 ירושלים) היה חוקר, סופר ומו"ל. עלה לארץ ישראל בשנת 1907, אך גורש ממנה על-ידי התורכים בשנת 1914. משם עבר ללמוד בפריז, ובעקבות מלחמת העולם הראשונה עבר לארגנטינה. לאחר שנתיים שם, חזר לארץ ישראל, התגייס ולחם בשורות הגדוד העברי. בשנות ה-20 עזב שוב והיגר לארצות הברית. הוא התיישב בבוסטון ועסק בחקר תולדות הקהילה היהודית בה, הקים ארכיון וחברה היסטורית יהודית. בשנות החמישים ביקר מספר פעמים בישראל, ובשנת 1974 התיישב בה. במשך השנים פרסם ספרים באנגלית וביידיש. האוסף מכיל מסמכים מגוונים, החל ממחקרים והרצאות שהעביר על ראשית היישוב היהודי בניו-אינגלנד, דיווחים על אירועים בקהילה היהודית בבוסטון ובארצות הברית בכלל, פעילות מוסדות פילנתרופיים בבוסטון, דרך התכתבויות אישיות עם מוסדות ואישים שונים, ועד חומר על האיגודים המקצועיים בתחילת המאה ה-20 ותיעוד פעילותם של סוחרים יהודיים במאות ה-17 וה-18. --

Broches' legacy reflects his fruitful and varied activities: research and lectures on the beginning of Jewish settlement in New England, documentation of the activities of Jewish merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries, reports on the philanthropic institutions in Boston, his correspondence with various institutions and personalities, reports concerning the Jewish community of Boston and various other American cities, publication concerning activities of Labor Unions at the start of the 20th century, protocols of teachers in Jewish schools, and many lists and bibliographies. Some of the materials in this collection were collected in the course of Broches' research, while another portion was collected within the framework of the archive he founded. The difference between the two categories is not always clearly distinguishable.

תקציר ביוגרפי Zalman Broches (Brachot) was born 1886 in Chavusy in the Mogilev district of Belarus. He emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1907. Expelled by the Turkish authorities in 1914, he moved to Paris to continue his studies. When World War I broke out, he travelled to Argentina. There, together with Joseph Mendelson, he founded the Yiddish literary weekly "Der Yiddisher Colonist" (the Yiddish colonist) (1916-1917) in the Dominguez colony established by the Baron de Hirsch. After a two-year stay in Argentina he returned to Eretz Israel to fight in the ranks of the "Hebrew Battalion" (of the British Army). In the 1920's he was once again forced to leave Mandatory Palestine, and he emigrated to the United States. He settled in Boston (Massachusetts) and engaged in researching the history of the local Jewish community, and in 1937 established the archives and historical society The Jewish Historical Society, Massachusetts. In the course of the 1950's he paid a number of visits to Israel, and in 1974 he settled there permanently. He died in 1977 in Jerusalem.
היסטורית בעלים Broches deposited his collection in the CAHJP in the beginning of the 1950's on the advice of Yitzhak Ben Zvi on behalf of the "Institute for the Research of Jewish communities in the Middle East", attached to the Hebrew University (refer to file 13a). Another portion of his bequest was given to the National Library in the late 1970s by his widow, Dr. Anna Mintz, and is filed there under ARC. 4* 1636.
