יצחק פריץ בער (1888 הלברשטאדט – 1980 ירושלים) היה היסטוריון בולט, מגדולי חוקרי תולדות היהודים בספרד הנוצרית בימי הביניים. בער למד פילוסופיה, פילולוגיה קלאסית והיסטוריה באוניברסיטאות ברלין, שטרסבורג, האלה (Halle) ופרייבורג. במהלך מלחמת העולם הראשונה שירת בער בעיקר בחזית הגרמנית המזרחית בחיל התותחנים. עם סיום המלחמה, משנת 1919, הוא היה עמית מחקר של ה"אקדמיה למדעי היהדות" (Akademie für die Wissenschaft des Judentums) בברלין. בשנת 1929 נענה בער להזמנה להצטרף לצוות ההוראה של האוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, ומאז התגורר בקביעות בירושלים. הוא מונה לפרופסור מן המניין להיסטוריה של עם ישראל בימי הביניים, במכון למדעי היהדות של האוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. בין השנים 1959-1930 הוא עמד בראש המחלקה להיסטוריה של עם ישראל באוניברסיטה. יצחק בער נמנה גם על ראשי "החברה הארצישראלית להיסטוריה ולאתנוגרפיה" (לימים "החברה ההיסטורית הישראלית"), ונמנה עם מייסדי ועורכי הרבעון "ציון." ספרו המפורסם של יצחק בער בשם תולדות היהודים בספרד הנוצרית פורסם לראשונה בעברית ב-1945 ונחשב לבסיס חשוב עבור מחקרים בתחום זה. אוסף הארכיון הפרטי של יצחק פריץ בער מכיל: חומר אישי כולל התכתבות אישית; התכתבות וחומרי לימוד הקשורים לעבודתו באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים; מקורות היסטוריים מגוונים שאסף לטובת מחקריו; מאמריו ועבודותיו שמעולם לא פורסמו; עבודותיו שיצאו לאור וביקורות על עבודותיו שהתפרסמו; פרסומים מודפסים של היסטוריונים אחרים --

The private collection of Yitzhak Fritz Baer consists of his personal documents and many records related to his profession as a historian and a senior lecturer at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The personal documents include: certificates for graduation from the gymnasia in Halberstadt and from the universities in Berlin, Strasbourg, Halle and Freiburg; a teaching certificate from the Royal Scientific Commission in Berlin (1914); and extensive correspondence with family members, researchers, friends, public figures, academic institutions and publishing houses. Family correspondence contains, for example, letters that Baer sent during his military service in the First World War (1915-1918), and letters that he sent to his brother from Jerusalem in the first half of the 1930s. The correspondence with publishing houses includes contracts with Schocken publishing house and The Institute of Spanish History in Buenos Aires (Institututo de Historia de España, Buenos Aires) in connection to publication of his works. The collection includes correspondence with Gershom Scholem (1929), Hannah Arendt (1947), Kurt Wilhelm (1948) and Friedrich Schmidt (1959), Selma Stern-Täubler (1968-1975), Prime Minister of Israel Levi Eshkol (1966-1967) and many others. The collection contains the Hebrew University’s correspondence with Baer regarding the terms of his employment, correspondence in relation to his students, and regarding the university’s committees. There are also: various copied historical sources Baer collected for his research; Baer’s articles and works that never were published; his published works and printed reviews on his publications; printed publications of other scholars. Study materials and texts of Baer’s lectures is another part of the collection. In addition to the materials that were deposited at the CAHJP shortly after is death, there are additional uncatalogued materials that were deposited in 2019.

תקציר ביוגרפי Yitzhak Fritz Baer was born in Halberstadt in 1888. He studied Jewish education, philosophy, classical philology, and history at the universities of Berlin, Strasbourg, Halle and Freiburg. His dissertation at the Freiburg University was entitled “Studies in the History of the Jews of the Kingdom of Aragonia in the 13th and 14th Centuries”, and the history of the Jews in medieval Christian Spain became a main area of his scholarly focus. During World War I, he served on the East German front in the artillery corps. In 1919, Baer was appointed research associate of the Akademie fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin. In 1929 he moved to Jerusalem and in 1930 he was appointed professor of medieval Jewish history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. From 1930 to 1959 he served as head of the university's department of Jewish history. He was one of the founders and editors of the Jewish historical review Zion, active member in the Israel Historical Society and was one of the founding members of the Israel Academy of Sciences. Baer’s famous book, entitled History of Jews in Christian Spain (first published in Hebrew in 1945), is regarded a basis for the studies of this subject. Since the late 1940s Baer devoted himself mainly to another topic - the study of Jewish life in the Land of Israel in the Second Temple Period (t’kufat bay’it she-ni). Yitzhak Fritz Baer passed away in Jerusalem in 1980.
