משפחת ספייגה (Sapiega) הייתה משפחת מגנאטים בדוכסות הגדולה של ליטא ובממלכת פולין-ליטא. מוצא המשפחה הינו מאזור סמולנסק, ואחוזותיהם שכנו בשטחי ליטא ובבלרוס של היום. בני המשפחה מילאו משרות בכירות בשרות המדינה, בכנסייה ובצבא. האוסף מכיל מסמכים על תושבים יהודים באחוזות שונות שהיו בבעלות בני המשפחה, נתונים על מיסוי יהודים וזכויותיהם בתחום של הלוואה בריבית, חומרים על פעילותם המסחרית של היהודים. חלק חשוב באוסף הינם חומרים על פעילותם הכלכלית של היהודים כחוכרי נכסים וזכויות מונופולין באחוזות משפחת ספייגה --

The collection contains valuable data and personal information on Jewish residents on estates owned by the Sapieha Family and records on the rights of Jews. For example, the collection contains lists of Jewish residents in Skuodas from 1719 and in Rozhany from 1747. In addition, there is a copy of the legislative act which mentions laws related to prohibitions imposed on Jews in money lending. The collection also contains materials about the economic activities of Jews including their involvement in leaseholding. A file from 1711 contains an inventory book from the town of Lyady (Glebova) noting the location of Jewish houses and other property and shows calculations, tables, books, and accounts of the registration of grain, cattle, poultry, and timber, production other property as well as fulfilment of the peasant’s obligations. A file from 1741 includes a contract for the lease of taverns in the region of Volhynia (Ukraine) concluded between Count Sapieha and the local Jewish community. Another example is a file from 1756 which includes a complaint by the former rent collector Wolf Beniaminovich, a resident of Bykhow, about his difficult financial situation and concerning a transfer of an inn to another location. In addition, the collection contains records on mutual obligations between Jews and financial disputes between them. For instance, a file from 1770 include records referring to the capture of Jewish merchants from Koden in the market in Zhlobin by other Jewish merchants as a result of a financial dispute. The collection also holds a Hebrew promissory note dated 1776 from Zel’va (Belarus).

תקציר ביוגרפי The Sapieha family was an established magnate family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The family originated from Smolensk and owned estates in Bykhow, Chereya, Derechin, Dombrowa, Druya, Koden, Ruzhana, Skuodas, Zelva and others in Lithuania and present-day Belarus. They also owned property and houses in Vilnius and Warsaw. Family members occupied high state offices in the GDL and high positions in the clergy: 22 members of the family were palatines of the GDL and 15 were marshals of the Supreme Tribunal of the GDL. The family included generals of artillery of the GDL and bishops. The estates of the Sapieha family in Russia, including Bykhow Castle, were confiscated following their participation in the uprising of 1830-1831.
