A collection of essays, many of them published previously in the 1980s-90s. The essays on pp. 7-232 focus on life in the Warsaw ghetto. The Jews who were deported to Treblinka from July 1942 passed through Zamenhof Street as they left the city. Describes the ghetto uprising of 19 April 1943, in which Zelazo took part, and life on the "Aryan side", where he fled after the uprising. Some Jews on the "Aryan side" were helped by the Polish organization Żegota; however, some were killed by Poles, especially during the Polish uprising in August 1944. The rest of the book includes essays on the rescue work of Raoul Wallenberg, the Nuremberg Trials, the Slánský trial, and life in Warsaw after the war.
