Beilinson is also Israel's biggest hospital. It's new purpose built children's hospital, is nearly complete and should be open by the end of the year. It will be among one of the most modern children's facilities in the world, both in methods of treatment and equipment. During the Gulf crisis the hospital was designated and prepared to deal with any eventuality, including dealing with large numbers of possible gas or chemical casualties. Although the hospital has been on an emergency footing, routine surgery still is performed, including the use of the latest state of the art procedures. Photo shows: the operation for the removal of gall-stones. The operation is performed by inserting two one centimetre tubes into the patient. Through one tube goes a light and video lens, which is transmitting a real time picture to television screens in the operating theatre. The second tube takes the remake surgical instruments that will actually remove the stone. The operation takes less than half-an-hour and the patient will remain in hospital for just two days instead of a week or more as when the procedure was carried out with conventional surgery. |
