Zionism and anti-semitism in Nazi Germany

From the late 18th century on, German antisemites conceived plans to expel the Jews to "Palestine". Alternately, Zionist thought in Germany, with its idea of an ethnic Jewish state, borrowed much from the "völkisch"-nationalist views popular amongst Germans. Examines Nazi policies toward Zionism in Germany between 1933-41, as well as the reaction of the Zionist movement to them. The Nazi stance was inconsistent: on the one hand, the Nazi doctrine regarded the Jews as incapable of building a state of their own, and Zionism itself - as a thinly veiled conspiracy for world domination. On the other hand, between 1933-38, Zionism was regarded as a useful tool to prevent Jewish assimilation and to promote Jewish emigration - hence, the more favorable treatment of Zionists by the regime. Zionists believed, naïvely, that the goal of the Nazis was consonant with theirs - to separate the two ethnic groups, and tried to negotiate with them. Dwells on the attitudes of the Zionist Federation in Germany and of the revisionist State Zionist Organization led by Georg Kareski. Kareski's plan of "orderly liquidation" of the Jewish community in Germany in cooperation with the regime was no less naïve than the plans of the ZVfD. In 1938 the Nazis concluded that the Zionists had fulfilled their task, and dissolved both organizations. Argues that although common ideas were shared by both Zionists and Nazis, one cannot conclude that there was "collaboration" between them.
