Jews and Christians on time and eternity

In the context of rampant antisemitism in France in the late 19th-early 20th century, presents a translation of "Notre jeunesse" (pp. 41-75), Péguy's portrait of Bernard Lazare who was a defender of Dreyfus and of Romanian Jews, Armenians, and French Catholics. Pp. 11-24 relate how Péguy opposed antisemitic stereotypes on two levels - by countering them with other generalizations and by qualilfying his own generalizations (even some negative ones about Jews) by stressing the common humanity of Jews and others. In contrast to many of his contemporaries, Péguy accepted French Jews as Frenchmen. He not only began his public career by defending a Jew, Dreyfus, he ended it similarly in the case of Henri Bergson. The interpretation of Péguy's "Portrait of Bernard-Lazare" shows how, for this Catholic thinker, Jews were not only objects but subjects as well. This may be surprising to many, since, as Aronowicz states, after World War II Péguy was appropriated by the Right.
