Auschwitz

Memoirs of the author (written in 1946), a German Jew born in 1909 in Berlin. In 1933 he emigrated to France, living first in Paris and then in Marseille. The memoir begins with Heinemann's deportation in March-April 1943 to Auschwitz. Describes the selection in Auschwitz, his internment in the Jaworzno labor camp, and the death march at war's end. Tells of the comradeship among the French prisoners, but also of the often ruthless struggle among the prisoners for the means of survival. His wife was deported to Ravensbrück and survived.
