The collection includes about 700 letters of the Bangert family (Christian and Tilli Bangert from Franfurt-Eschenheim). A teacher by profession, Christian Bangert served as a soldier and later as an officer in the German Army. In addition, there are other letters to and from soldiers during World War One, general historical correspondence and few historical documents about property ownerships in Germany from the 19th century.

The materials were part of a larger collection of historical documents, most of them from the written estate of Max Brod, which have been confiscated by the German Federal Police in Wiesbaden around 2015. Although very different in their content, the local court (Amtsgericht) in Wiesbaden decided on July 30, 2018 that these correspondences of the (non-Jewish) Bangert family and others were apparently part Max Brod's estate, since they origin from the same period and no further explanation about their acquisition history was priveded by neither side. Together with the stolen items from Brod's archive, these corrensondences were transferred to the National Library by the German police in May 2019. |
