The collection contains correspondence and documents from the period between 1717-1871 concerning "Schutz" - protection to enable Jews to reside in the town and attempts to acquire civil rights; licenses and concessions in different areas of trade and cottage industry, for example soap and candles; disputes with the local guilds; permits for buying houses and employing workers; a few documents from the official Jewish community (1824, 1825, 1865).

Gifhorn, today a city in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Braunschweig, was formerly (until 1945) in the Prussian province of Hannover. Between 1705-1810 Gifhorn was subject to the rule of the Principality of the Electorate of Hannover (the Electors were also the Kings of England: George I-William IV). The Jews had no right of residence in the principality and were under the protection of the local mayors or nobles. The names appearing in the documents are from the families of Isaac Arendt, the first "Schutzjude" (1717), of Levi Heine, of Jonas Moses Friedberg and from the Menke family.
