Biographical summary |
Gifhorn, today a city in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Braunschweig, was formerly (until 1945) in the Prussian province of Hannover. Between 1705-1810 Gifhorn was subject to the rule of the Principality of the Electorate of Hannover (the Electors were also the Kings of England: George I-William IV). The Jews had no right of residence in the principality and were under the protection of the local mayors or nobles. The names appearing in the documents are from the families of Isaac Arendt, the first "Schutzjude" (1717), of Levi Heine, of Jonas Moses Friedberg and from the Menke family. There was inter-marriage between these families. For more information see: פנקס הקהילות אנציקלופדיה של הישובים היהודיים...גרמניה - כרך רביעי - חלק ראשון. ירושלים, יד ושם, תשס"ז, עמ' 412-408 |
