Guided Tours at the National Library of Israel

Introductory Tour

Hear the story of the National Library from its inception at the end of the 19th century to its renewal in the 2000s. The guided tour includes a visit to the rotating exhibition that presents original items from the Library's collections, a viewing of the giant colorful stained glassed windows created by the artist Mordecai Ardon, a visit to the Eran Laor Cartographic Collection where ancient maps of Jerusalem and Israel are displayed, as we all as a glimpse of the plans for the new Library building currently being built across from the Knesset.

Target audience: Adults

Duration: 1 hour

Number of participants: 25 people or more

Availability: Sunday-Thursday

The tour includes an entry fee.

Free Guided Tour

Free guided tours take place every Thursday, at 11:00 A.M.

Pre-registering is required in order to take part in the tour. The tour takes place with a minimum of 5 participants.

Librarians and Information Science Students

The National Library is at the cutting edge of librarianship in Israel. Librarians and information science students are invited to come learn about the reception, classification, and cataloging process and see the advanced services the Library provides for the public and the broad scope of digital materials it holds.

A guided tour for librarians and information professionals at the National Library includes a visit to the professional departments, a look at the readings rooms, and a visit at the digitization center. In addition, it is possible to have sit downs with the librarians and department managers about the unique processes which take place at the National Library.

Target Audience: librarians and information science students

Duration: 1-2 hours

Students and Scholars

Writing a research paper or undergraduate thesis? The primary sources of the Library are at your disposal.

The National Library is a central research library specializing in the fields of Jewish studies, history of Israel studies, Islam and Middle East studies, and the humanities in general. The Library collections hold over 4 million books, dozens of Hebrew publications, thousands of Hebrew and Arabic manuscripts, periodicals, hundreds of personal archives, the National Sound Archive, maps, photographs, and recordings.

The guided tour for students and scholars includes a visit to the reading rooms, a tutorial on how to search for primary and secondary sources in the National Library collections, an introduction to the research facilities of the Library, a demonstration on how to acquire a library card, and one-on-one training on the use of the Library's digital tools.

Undergraduate students are welcome to explore the National Library and its student services, as well as visit the various reading rooms.

Graduate students, research fellows, and scholars are welcome to explore the special collections of the Library further, meet the curators, the collection managers, and explore unique items related to their research.

Lecturers interested in providing their students with valuable tools for research are welcome to contact the visitors' center in order to coordinate a tour related to their research.

Teachers and Education Students

How can you use the unique items in the National Library collections in history, geography, citizenship, and even science class?

The National Library provides broad educational activities based on the Library's unique items from its diverse collections.

The guided tour for teachers includes an introduction to the story of the National Library, a look at items from the Library's collections, in addition to providing work sheets and lesson plans on a variety of subjects. Teachers will be coached on how to use these items in the context of classroom lessons.

Lectures about the Library Collections

Tours can include a half-an-hour lecture about one of the following topics:

  • The Music Collection and Sound Archive​
  • The Gershom Scholem Collection of Kabbalah, Hasidism and Jewish mysticism
  • The Department of Manuscripts and Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts
  • The Archives Department
  • World War I as reflected through the collections of the National Library
