Lending Services

The Circulation Department

The Circulation Department handles loans to individuals and institutions. You must have a valid library card in order to borrow materials.

The department also handles requests for viewing items from our special collections.

The Circulation Desk is located on the ground floor, it is open Sunday-Thursday between 9:00-18:00.

Ordering Books and Items

You can order books and other items for use in the reading rooms or at home, using the online catalogue.

To see if a copy is available to be borrowed:
After you have logged in to your account on the Library website, locate the item you want using the Library's online catalogue, and click on "Order".

• Copies specified as "Requestable to Reading Rooms" can be ordered to a reading room and are for in-library use only.
• Copies specified as "Copy for Loan" may be taken home.

To borrow books for home use, you must obtain a library card and purchase a membership
You can purchase either a one-year membership or a six-month membership.

• Foreign citizens must present their passport and make a deposit.

Home Use Memberships

Any citizen of Israel with an official ID card can purchase a membership which enables them to borrow books home from the National Library.

Non-citizens can purchase memberships upon presenting a passport as well as a security deposit.

The membership can only be issued or renewed in the presence of the owner the ID card or passport.

The membership fee, the number of simultaneous loans allowed and the length of loans are dependent on the group the reader belongs to.

Book Loans and Loan Periods

How Many Books Can Be Borrowed at a Time and for How Long?

The reader is responsible for returning the books to the Library at the end of the loan period. Materials are not renewed automatically, and non-returned items will incur a fine (5 NIS per item, for every day the item is overdue).

The National Library reserves the right to take disciplinary action against those who fail to return a book on time, damage a book or refuse to pay a fine.

Despite the above, if a book that is out on loan is requested by another reader, the borrower must return the book by the updated return date, which will be sent to him/her by email.

Renewing Loan Periods

Items that have not been requested by another user may have their loan periods renewed, up to a year. This renewal is not automatic.
Loan periods may be renewed using the online catalogue. Login to "Merhav", enter your user name and password. Then click on "My Account".

You can also renew materials by calling the department: 074-7336-414/3.

Fines for Late Returns

The Library collects fines for late returns of items. The fine is 5 NIS a day ​per item.

A reader may not loan additional books so long as he/she holds a book that has passed its return date or so long as he/she has not paid any outstanding fines.

Lost Books and Items

A reader who has lost an item they borrowed may choose one of two options:

  1. Independently purchasing the same item as a replacement. Only an identical item, belonging to the same edition as the original, will be accepted.
  2. Payment for the lost item, the cost of which will be determined by the acquisition department, with the addition of a handling fee for every lost item.

Accessing Rare Items and Archive Materials

Ordering rare items and archival materials requires proper authorization from the Circulation Department.
