[1 wayba = ca. 4 gallons p. 445] The remarks about the changes ('died,' 'absent,' and so forth [MR Cohen yasluhin, l.19 "recovered" SDG: doing well musafir SDG leaving safar: left]) give the impression that they were written during the execution of the carefully written document and not added as an afterthought. [my impression is that they were inserted afterwards note the physical relationship between names and the word, which is often above the line, squeezed in at the end and slightly above, even where there is ample room. MR Cohen] In view of all this, the nature of the list should be understood thus: Before a comprehensive distribution of wheat was made, the list tabulating the preceding distribution was scrutinized and all major changes, such as cases of death, changes in the economic situation of a family, or its departure, actual or impending, were indicated. This up to date list would be copied by an accomplished scribe and then be submitted to the communal authorities for action. Therefore, we find one item followed by this remark: 'Note, ruq'a, from the rayyis: this man should not receive anything.' The reference can only be to the Nagid Samuel b. Hananya, who assumed office in 1140....
