Describes Nazi anti-Jewish measures and their application in Freiburg. These measures were meant to exclude Jews step by step from all sectors of the German economy, society, and culture, and to cut off all contacts between Jews and "Aryans"; in Freiburg, they often anticipated official government policy and law. Details their effects on individual Jews, non-Jewish "non-Aryans", and mixed families. Deals, also, with the work of the Jewish community, particularly the elementary school for children expelled from regular schools, and the "Lehrhaus" for Jewish adult education. Relates the events of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the deportation to Gurs on 22 September 1940 and conditions there, and later deportations to Theresienstadt. Mentions efforts by individuals and organizations, particularly by Gertrud Luckner as representative of the Catholic "Caritas", to help Jews and to make contact with deportees. Jews from elsewhere in Germany were hidden in Freiburg family homes or Catholic monasteries, or helped to cross the border into Switzerland.
