Children during the Holocaust

A collection of documents (translated into English) describing the Nazi genocide through the eyes of young victims, both Jews and non-Jews. Presents excerpts from memoirs, diaries, and letters; contemporary documents, including Nazi ones; excerpts from testimonies presented at the Nuremberg and Eichmann trials; excerpts from Nazi textbooks for children; and photographs. Deals with the experiences of Jewish children in prewar Nazi Germany, and annexed Austria and the Czech Lands, including their marginalization and humiliation, the shock of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, and emigration. Discusses children's wartime experiences: loss of close relatives, starvation, and mass murder, life in ghettos and camps, and children as victims of Nazi racial hygiene and "medical" experiments. Describes children's attempts to cope with the calamity through learning, or via drama, art, and poetry; children's roles in the resistance; rescue of children, including hiding on the "Aryan side"; and liberation and postwar experiences. Ch. 7 (pp. 243-282), "The Lives of Others: 'Aryan' Children and the Nazi Regime", deals with the impact of the Nazi racist propaganda on German children. The introduction by Tec (pp. xxi-xli) discusses the issue of children in the Holocaust, drawing on her own experiences.
