Vertraut und fremd zugleich

Contains an introduction by Binnenkade (pp. 1-19), and three essays, one by each of the three authors. Pp. 21-94, "Der fremde Nachbar: Wahrschauer Frankisten in der Pamphletliteratur des polnischen Vierjährigen Sejms (1788-1792)", by Emeliantseva, discuss the relationship between Frankist adherents and the Warsaw bourgeois, nobility, and clerical population, who begrudged the economic achievements of the Frankists. Although they had converted to Christianity, anonymous pamphlets claimed they were not authentic citizens or real Catholics, and that they practiced their old religion clandestinely. Pp. 95-154, "Kontaktnahmen: Jüdisch-christliche Kontaktzonen im Surbtal (Schweiz)", by Binnenkade, discuss the objection of the Aargau "Mannli" (a group of men) in 1862 to the intention of Swiss authorities to grant Swiss citizenship to Jews of Lengnau and Endingen. Their petition, based on anti-Jewish stereotypes, was opposed by the Jewish community. Although the majority voted against the draft bill, public opinion was divided, and the Jews were finally granted citizenship. Pp. 155-216, "Zwischen Einbeziehung und Ausgrenzung: Die Juden in Lemberg 1918-1919", by Pacholkiv, discuss the issue of Jewish-Polish-Ukrainian cohabitation. Daily contact between the three population groups was rather peaceful before World War I. After the breakup of the Habsburg monarchy, 660,000 Jews found themselves in the midst of a conflict between the Poles and Ukrainians, which resulted, in spite of Jewish neutrality, in a pogrom against the Jews.
