Traces the history of the author's paternal and maternal relatives, members of the Milewski and Ryfman families of Poland, and their fate in the Shoah. Describes the German occupation, as well as the establishment of ghettos and their liquidation, in the towns near Warsaw where the two families lived: Miedzeszyn, Falenica, Jabłonna, and Żelichów. Of Milewski's nine maternal aunts and uncles, only Burech and Fishel Ryfman survived, as did Milewski's mother, Mirla Milewski. All three had emigrated to France before the war. Of her father's four siblings, three survived. One uncle emigrated to Palestine, another escaped to the USSR, Motel Milewski survived in Poland, and Mendel Milewski, François Milewski's father, survived in France. Mirla and Mendel Milewski left Paris in 1942, together with Burech and Fishel Ryfman, and found refuge in Livry-Gargan. Their property was Aryanized. All but one of Milewski's grandparents perished at the hands of the Nazis in Poland.
