Vol. 1 deals with the history of the Jewish territorialist movement between 1903-45, vol. 2 with the years 1945-59. The territorialist movement, which split off from Zionism in 1903-05, called for the creation of a compact Jewish territory outside Palestine. In response to the economic emigration from Eastern Europe and Hitler's rise to power, the Freeland League was formally established in London in 1935. It had centers in many European countries, most importantly in Poland, France, and England. Several hundred Freeland groups were also active in the U.S. The organization tried unsuccessfully to obtain land in Ecuador, Australia, and Surinam. Its most well-known ventures included a plan to acquire land for settling Jewish refugees in Australia in 1938 and a plan to resettle 30,000 Jewish DPs in Surinam after the war; both plans failed. After the death of the League's long-time leader, Isaac Steinberg in 1957, the focus gradually shifted to more cultural, Yiddishist goals.
