Letters and dispatches, 1924-1944

Pp. 213-284, "Dispatches from Budapest, July 18-December 12, 1944", deal with Wallenberg's rescue activities on behalf of the Jews in Budapest. Pp. 213-232 contain an introduction by Per Anger, relating his own memoirs of events in Budapest. He briefly describes the period between the German occupation of Hungary (March 1944) and the arrival of Wallenberg (in July). He assesses Wallenberg's personal traits (e.g. intellect, boldness, inventiveness, coolheadedness) which helped him to accomplish his mission. Estimates the number of Jews rescued by the Swedish legation as ca. 50,000, of whom approximately half were under Wallenberg's protection. Pp. 235-278 contain Wallenberg's dispatches and personal letters from Budapest. Pp. 279-284 contain an afterword by Rachel Oestreicher Haspel, President of the Raoul Wallenberg Committee of the United States.
