"States that the first indications of hostility of Turks toward Jews appeared already at the end of 1922, with Turkey's occupation of Anatolia and Thrace, before the establishment of the Turkish republic in 1923. The anti-Jewish attitudes were conceived in the context of hostility toward minorities. The danger of 'world Judaism,' the domination of the economy by Jews, etc., served as motives for attacks against Jews. Mentions cases of incitement by the Turkish press. Deals with acts of violence of the Turkish population, with the ambivalent attitude of the government, and with the lack of equal rights for Jews. Pp. 56-85 deal with the situation of the Jews in Turkey during the Holocaust period, during which Germany exerted pressure on Turkey to join the war, but Turkey kept its pact with Britain. A certain number of Jewish refugees were accepted, and the border was never really closed to them. Mentions a special tax instituted in 1942 which was much higher for the Jews than for the rest of the population.
