Versteinert, verharmlost, vergessen

A survey of places in present-day West Germany where Nazi concentration and forced-labor camps were situated or where other Nazi atrocities occurred. Relates the history of each site, the postwar investigations of the atrocities, and the trials, if any, of those responsible. Notes that memorials were established on the initiative of survivors or of German civic groups willing to take responsibility for the past, often in opposition to most of the local community; in some cases they were vandalized by neo-Nazis. Other sites have been converted to other uses without mention of the past.
