Memoirs of a Jew from Biełsko, Poland, born in 1932. After the German invasion in 1939, Huppert and his parents fled to Lvov. In November 1941 they were interned in the ghetto, but soon escaped. Huppert's father, a lawyer, travelled to Kraków as a non-Jew, but was denounced by a Polish former acquaintance, arrested by the Gestapo, and executed. Huppert and his mother, Teresa, then fled to Stryj (now Ukraine), posing as non-Jews. His mother worked at various jobs; for a time she even worked at a German government office. Fearing discovery, they moved to various places; in Nowy Sącz Huppert's mother was forced to help a partisan group and was then arrested and imprisoned. Huppert arranged for a member of the Polish underground, Jadwiga Wolska, to secure his mother's release. They remained in Nowy Sącz, where Huppert's mother worked for Wolska; the latter was posthumously honored as a Righteous Gentile by Yad Vashem. The Hupperts were liberated by Soviet forces in January 1945 and lived in Poland until their emigration to Israel in 1950.
