Based on ca. 150 unpublished wartime diaries and postwar memoirs (as well as some published material) by Hungarian soldiers fighting on the Eastern front in 1941-43, explores the opinions of these soldiers concerning Jews and the "Jewish question". Only one-seventh of the manuscripts contain opinions regarding the Jews. The comments of those who mention Jews and the "Jewish question" are greatly influenced by prevailing anti-Jewish propaganda and tend to depict Jews as rulers of the USSR and the force responsible for the war. Discusses the soldiers' views on mass murders of Jews by Germans (especially the Kamenets-Podolskii massacre) and on Jews in the Jewish military labor units attached to the Second Hungarian Army. The Hungarian soldiers are often gratified by the fact that the Jewish members of these units had to do hard manual labor and they approve of the deportation of Jews from Hungary to the East. At the same time, they sometimes feel compassion for Jews of the military labor units, who are starving and have inadequate clothing and medical services. The soldiers' origin, age, or profession seem to have had relatively little influence on their attitudes toward Jews.
