The Russian Religious Jews (RRJ) Fund was established in London by Ernie Hirsch in the late 1970s. Between 1980 and 1990, the year before the Iron Curtain fell, the organization sent 246 emissaries, including prominent rabbis, Jewish educators and students on 153 trips to meet with approximately 300 Russian refusenik families. The rabbis who travelled to the Soviet Union included Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu, Moshe Kupetz, Avrohom Katz, Joey Grunfeld, Sammy Goldberg, and Dayan Berel Berkowitz who gave shiurim. One pair would inform the next which Mishnah or halachic topic they had studied, so that the shiurim could continue in an orderly way. The emissaries also filled their suitcases with kosher food, Jewish religious objects and other items such as cameras and coats that could be sold on the black market to bring in some money to feed their families.
