The collection consists of 29 stereoscopic photographs depicting various locations in Jerusalem published by Underwood & Underwood at the turn of the 20th century. The majority of the collection is in English, with basic photograph captions also translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Russian. Photographs show general views of citie, daily life in urban and agricultural settings, prominent monuments and landmarks, ancient buildings, the landscape and the natural environment, and religious rites and processions in places in Palestine (present day Israel and the West Bank). Cities and towns depicted include Jaffa, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Beit Jala, Hebron and "Enshemesh".

Underwood & Underwood began publishing stereographs in 1890 and established an educational unit in 1895. Around 1900 they introduced boxed sets, with specific themes such as education, religion, and travel, depicting tourist areas of the world. ‘Traveling in the Holy Land’ was a popular boxed set of 100 Stereocards from which a selection of 27 cards with historical sites in Jerusalem was selected as the special ‘Jerusalem Tour’ set. Each card includes two Albumen prints photographed with a stereo-camera, a short description of the site and the company’s logo. |
