רמת התיאור Fonds Record
תקציר ביוגרפי Lady Rachel was born in Bombay in 1877 to Flora (Farha) and Solomon (Suleiman) David Sassoon (Solomon's documents are in sub-fonds ARC. 4* 1790 02 and Flora's documents are in sub-fonds ARC. 4* 1790 03). Following her father's death in 1894, Rachel worked closely with Flora in running the family business. From 1902 Rachel divided her time between London and Bombay because of the regular trips Flora had to make on account of the treatment required for Rachel's sister Mozelle's illness. In 1911 Rachel moved into the family's residence at 32 Bruton Street. The next year Rachel married Sir David Ezra and returned with him to Calcutta. Rachel Ezra died in Calcutta on January 25, 1952 and was buried there next to her husband.
Rachel was prominent in Calcutta society, and was involved in social and philanthropic activities, both in the Jewish and Indian communities. Her diaries bear witness to the dinner parties she hosted for the nobility and business men in India. In 1913 she founded and ran the Jewish Women's League in Calcutta, as well as two hospitals, and, following her husband's death, she was the head of the board of management of the Magen David synagogue, which served as the community centre for the Jewish community in Calcutta. Before and during the Second World War she was involved in the absorption of Jewish refugees arriving in India. In 1948 she was awarded the O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) and in 1949 she was elected head of the Zionist Federation in India. Material in the archive shows that she was also involved in spiritual and intellectual pursuits, for example, her religious life style and learning with private teachers on the one hand, and her writing and art on the other.
David Elias Ezra (Bachar) was born in Calcutta in 1871 to Eliyahu (Elias) David Joseph Ezra and Mozelle, daughter of Sir Albert Sassoon, who were among the richest and most prominent figures in India at that time. David was involved with public and philanthropic activities in India. In 1884 he ran the Magen David synagogue in Calcutta, which had been founded by his father. The place was used as the centre of Jewish activities in the region. In 1912 he married Rachel Sassoon, to whom he was related on his mother's side, and in 1926 he was appointed Sheriff of Calcutta. He served as Director of the Reserve Bank of India and from 1938-1939 he was president of The Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal. He was a nature lover and a well-known ornithologist.Sir David Ezra died in 1947.
Rachel and David Ezra's house at 3 Kyd Street, Calcutta, was a focus for activities relating to the running of the state's Jewish community and also a hub of political, public and economic activity. During both world wars the house was a focal point for aid to Jewish soldiers posted in the area, and also a centre for the absorption and assistance to Jewish refugees from the East and from Europe. The couple were both active in Zionist affairs.
