פרופ' שמעון אברמסקי (2010-1916), היסטוריון יהודי-בריטי, עסק בעיקר בהיסטוריה היהודית המודרנית ובמרקסיזם. היה פעיל וחבר המפלגה הקומוניסטית בבריטניה. הארכיון כולל מסמכים אישיים, התכתבויות עם מגוון גדול של אנשים ומוסדות אקדמיים, בעיקר באירופה, צפון אמריקה וישראל, כתבי יד של מחקרים, מאמרים ומאמרים אקדמיים, בעיקר על מרקסיזם והיסטוריה יהודית מודרנית, וחומרים אודות אביו, הרב יחזקאל אברמסקי.

Chimen Abramsky was born on 12 September 1916 in Minsk, Russia, son of Rabbi Yecheskel Abramsky. In 1932 he left the Soviet Union to England with his family, and settled in London. In 1935 Abramsky came to Palestine and started his studies at The Institute of Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In August 1939 he returned to London, where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1940 he married Miriam Nirenstein, whose family owned the well-known Jewish publishing and book trade company Shapiro, Valentine & Co, where he worked as manager from 1940 to 1969. In 1941 joined the British Communist Party and was the head of the Jewish Section there, until 1958. Published numerous books and articles about Karl Marx and Marxism. In 1965 elected to a senior fellowship in St. Antony's College, Oxford, and appointed lecturer in modern Jewish history in University College, London (in 1974 he was appointed there professor and head of Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies). In 1974 elected president of Jewish Historical Society of Great Britain. In 1986 retired as professor emeritus from London University. Lectured in many academic institutions in Europe, America and Israel. Published many book reviews and articles on Jews in Eastern Europe, Jewish Art etc. From 1960 to 1994 was chief consultant to Sotheby's Auction House on rare Hebrew books and manuscripts, and wrote for them more than 70 catalogues. Abramsky was world known bibliographer and book collector. Chimen Abramsky passed away in London on 14 March 2010. |
