The private papers of Luise Rachel Herrmann include few personal documents, some correspondence, mainly with the Czech pianist Karel Hoffmeister (1868-1952), and mainly, dozens of b/w photographs, most of them portraits. These materials relate to the rich cultural life of the "Prague Circle" Jewish Zionist activists, in Europe and later, in Palestine and Israel.

Luise Rachel Hermann (née Wertheimer) was born on July 16th, 1894, in the village of Svijany-Podolí, Czech Republic (than: part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). In 1912 she graduated the Prague Academy of Music as a pianist. In 1920 she married Paul Herrmann, brother of the Zionist leader Leo Herrmann and an active Zionist himself. In 1927, Under Hugo Bergman's influence, Rachel Herrmann started learning Hebrew and in 1938 she graduated the Higher Institute for Jewish Studies in Prague (Nejvyšší rada Svazů židovských náboženských obcí v Čechách, na Moravě a ve Slezsku) and became a Hebrew teacher. In 1939 Rachel Herrmann immigrated to Palestine, after leaving Prague with the last train. She settled, with her family, in Kfar Vitkin (כפר ויתקין). In 1961 Herrmann was called by Prof. Shmuel Hugo Bergman to assist him in his academic work. Herrmann moved to Jerusalem, and became Prof. Bergman's personal assistant and secretary, until his death, in 1975. In the following years, Herrmann took an active part in preparing his posthumous writings for publication. Rachel Luise Herrmann died in Jerusalem, on September 27th, 1982 (יום הכיפורים ה'תשמ"ג). |
