Chaim-Pavel Abramovitch Barchan was born on March 16th, 1876 in the village of Lunna (Лунна) near Grodno, Russia. After he had graduated the Royal Gymnasium in Danzig, Barchan settled in St. Petersburg. In 1908 he moved to Berlin and started his literary career as a writer and journalist in Russian and German periodicals, among them the Jewish-German magazines "Ost und West" and "Die Welt", and the Russian journal "Аполлон". Barchan translated some pieces from the Russian classical literature into German, and did some translations from German into Russian as well. Barchan was one of the leading figures among the Russian Émigré in Berlin, and played a major role in the success of the Ballets Russes in Germany at the early 1920s. Barchan also collected photographs of Ballet dancers and even photographed himself. In 1934 Barchan was forced to leave Germany, and moved to France. He settled in Paris. After the German occupation, Barchan escaped to Poitiers, where he was arrested by French policemen in mid October 1942. Eventually, Barchan was sent to Auschwitz, where he was murdered on November 11th, 1942. Some books from Barchan's private library can be found at the Israel Museum Library. |
