אמיל ראס (1910-1993), במהלך לימודי המשפטים בברן, הזמין את אלזה לסקר-שילר להרצות עבור ארגון הסטודנטים היהודים בעת שהייתה בגלות בשווייץ. למרות שהיה ביניהם הפרש גילאים של יותר מ-40 שנה הוא הפך לאחד מחבריה הטובים, עם הכינוי מיל שניתן לו על ידה. הוא עבר את הבחינות הממלכתיות ב-1934, ובהמשך שימש גם כעורך דינה בענייני הגירה.

The original letters of Emil Raas to Lasker-Schüler are part of the Else Lasker-Schüler Archive (ARC. Ms. Var. 501). A CD with a Swiss radio programme on Emil Rass and on Else Lasker-Schüler broadcasted in March 2015 was transferred to the sound collection. |

Emil Raas (Bern 1910 - 1993) was a Jewish lawyer in Bern, friend and supporter of Else Lasker-Schüler during her stay in Switzerland and her advocate in visa issues. As the vice-president of the Jewish student organization in Bern he invited her in 1933 for a reading, and after a lengthy walk through the city and conversations they became close friends. Her nickname for him was Mill, the extent of their friendship can be see in the vast number of letters kept in this archive. In 1934 Raas passed the state examinations for law in Bern, and established with his friend Georges Brunschvig (1908–1973) a law office. From 1935 until 1937 they represented the"Schweizerischer Israelitischer Gemeindebund" and the "Israelitische Cultusgemeinde Bern" in a lawsuit regarding the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", which is also known as the Berner Prozess. In 1938 Raas and Brunschvig published the book "Vernichtung einer Fälschung". Der Prozeß um die erfundenen ›Weisen von Zion‹" (Zürich). Raas also represented Else Lasker-Schüler in regard to her immigration problem with Swiss authorities, but in the end could not prevent her being expelled from the country. |

The archive was permanently deposited in the National Library of Israel by Raas' daughters, Ruth Livne (Jerusalem) and Maryse Raas (Switzerland), in June 2006. |
