The collection includes a group of type-machine copies of letters, sent by Frumkin to some leaders of the Russian émigré, among them, many letters to Alexander Kerensky (Алексaндр Фёдорович Кeренский), and a group of letters addressed to Frumkin.

Jacob Frumkin (Яков Григорьевич Фрумкин) was one of the leaders of Russian Jewry in the 20th century. Frumkin was born in 1879 in Kovno, Lithuania. In 1905 he graduated the University of St. Petersburg Law School. In 1906 Frumkin was one of the founders of ORT organization (Общества по распространению ремесленного и земледельческого труда среди евреев -ОРТ) in Russia. After the 1917 Revolution Frumkin settled in Berlin, where he became the director of the local ORT branch, and in 1921 he organized there the first international ORT congress. Frumkin was one of the main activists among the organization of Russian Jews in Germany, and took part in many publishing activities and literary initiatives. In 1938 Frumkin immigrated to France. In 1941 Frumkin escaped from Paris, and settled in New York. In 1956 Frumkin was elected to be President, Union of Russian Jews in the U.S.A. Under Frumkin's leadership, this union has published many works, in English and Russian, dedicated to the History of Russian Jewry. Jacob Frumkin died in New York on September 27th, 1971. |
