תיאור The visit was the first he has made outside of Europe since taking office in July of this year.Admitting that although as a committed Christian it was "an uplifting experience to visit the Holy Land", he said his stay indeed had “a highly political purpose". During an intense and gruelling schedule over a period of less than 30 hours Herzog visited Yad Vashem and held separate meetings with President Weizman, Prime Minister Rabin, Foreign Minister Peres, Knesset Speaker Shevah Weiss, Supreme Court President Justice Meir Shamgar and several families of Israel's MIAs - among others. The guest - in his speech at the State dinner given in his honour by President Weizman - was firm on the need to educate Germans and the whole world about the Holocaust: "The vast majority of my countrymen were born after the fall of the Third Reich, or were children during the final years of the Nazi regime. This generation is free of guilt, but it is not free from the duty to learn from the past...We must also strengthen the conviction that the horrors of the past, have imposed on Germany a special responsibility towards the Jewish people and given rise to a special sense of solidarity with the State of Israel”. At a later press conference Herzog reiterated: "We cannot and must not forget. We cannot repress the darkest chapter in our history, but must instead take to heart the lessons it can teach us. This is the continuing responsibility and obligation of all Germans - even and especially those of the rising generation". He also spoke of the problem of the extreme right wing in Germany today. "(There is] justified criticism of the acts of a tiny group of incurable radicals. Combating extremism and racism wherever they occur is both a national and a global task.
