Analyzes the response of Hamburg's Jewish community to the economic and political crises and increasing antisemitism of the end of the Weimar Republic and the first year of the Nazi regime. Hamburg's Jews were more integrated and suffered less from antisemitism than other Jews in Germany. Nevertheless, the Jews' exclusion from German society had already begun, although most refused to see it. Some Jewish community leaders, especially the Zionists, worried by antisemitic incidents and the Nazi threat, demanded that the community council take action, but the majority held that this was the responsibility of the police or of the Centralverein. Describes the activities of the CV, the Reichsbund judischer Frontsoldaten, the Zionists, and other organizations in combating antisemitism, mainly by appeals to the courts or to public opinion. After the Nazi takeover, the Jews realized that Germany rejected them.
