The faith and doubt of Holocaust survivors

Based mainly on a survey conducted by Brenner in the 1970s among 708 Holocaust survivors residing in Israel, aimed at ascertaining how the Holocaust affected their faith and religious behavior. A ten-page questionnaire was distributed among 608 survivors, while 100 survivors were interviewed personally. The religious and theological topics addressed in the survey were broad - e.g. belief in God, the Messiah, and the chosenness of Israel; the religious meaning of the Holocaust; the connection between the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel - as was the spectrum of the respondents' religious reactions to their experiences.
