Edith Stein

A biography of Edith Stein, emphasizing her struggle for inner veracity as a woman, a Silesian Jew, an intellectual, a teacher and publicist, and finally as a nun. Pp. 219-279 trace the Nazi period. Mentions Stein's request to Pope Pius XI in April 1933 for protection of the Jews, which was not granted. After her dismissal in 1933 from a teaching position at the Deutsches Institut für wissenschaftliche Pedagogik in Münster, she entered a Carmelite monastery. In 1938 she fled to a convent in the Netherlands, but was followed by the Nazi persecution. She was deported to Auschwitz and murdered there on 9 August 1942.
