A history of the Warsaw ghetto, from its establishment until the end of the ghetto uprising in 1943. Briefly describes the events that preceded the transfer of the Jews to the ghetto. Dwells on the early period, when there was still a semblance of normal existence, and even a social gap between rich and poor. Later, the situation worsened and the ghetto became a realm of starvation and disease. Focuses on the issue of collaboration with the Nazis, both Jewish and Polish. Describes the establishment of the Jewish resistance organizations in the ghetto - the Antifascist Bloc, Jewish Fighting Organization, and Jewish Military Union; the deportation of Jews to Treblinka; and the uprising. Discusses the attitudes of Poles toward the events in the ghetto. Many antisemites supported the Nazi murder of Jews, whereas many others revised their antisemitism; a significant number of Poles tried to help Jews. Pp. 3-12 contain a preface by Aleksandr Kh. Gorfunkel, relating the story of Alekseyev's book: it was written in 1964, but was rejected for publication.
