Death comes in yellow

The labor camp of Skarżysko-Kamienna in Poland was established by the munitions firm Hugo Schneider A.G. of Leipzig in 1942. The camp consisted of three sections; a small Jewish camp was attached to each section. Non-Jews in the camp were usually released when their tasks were completed; however, since the Jews were eventually to be exterminated, they received different treatment. The firm's management preferred Jewish slave labor because of the low cost. Ca. 25,000 Jews passed through the Skarzysko camp. The conditions for the Jews were worse than in the concentration camps and the mortality rate was very high. In spring 1944 the shipments of Jews to Skarżysko stopped and the management improved the living conditions enough to ensure the survival of the Jewish work force.
