Translation of the "Vindiciae Judaeorum" by Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657), a rabbi from Amsterdam, published in April 1656 in the wake of the conference held in London in December 1655 by the Lord Protector Cromwell to debate the possible readmission of the Jews to England. The general atmosphere in England was not sympathetic towards the Jews, and many anti-Jewish pamphlets were published (e.g. by William Prynne). In his work, Menasseh ben Israel refuted (on the basis of Jewish religious texts and testimonies) antisemitic accusations such as those of ritual murder, blasphemy and cursing of non-Jews, proselytism, usury, and Judaism being an idolatrous or even pagan religion.
