מרד הנצורים

A biography of Mordechaj Anielewicz (1919-1943), leader of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Relates his activities in the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement (which went underground after the German occupation) and in the Warsaw ghetto. After the deportation of ca. 300,000 Jews in summer 1942, Anielewicz and other leaders of Zionist youth movements decided to organize the resistance. When deportations began again in January 1943, some members of the resistance fought back; 12 Germans and 1,000 Jews were killed in the fighting, but only 6,000 Jews were deported. When deportations began again in April, Anielewicz knew that the situation of the Jews was hopeless, but ordered his fighters to try to kill as many Germans as possible. He and many others perished in early May. Includes entries from Gutman's diary. The third edition includes (on pp. 7-31) an interview with Gutman conducted by Josef Raab in 1993 and published in "Yalkut Moreshet" 54 (1993).
