Die fremden Jahre

Reminiscences of two German Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany in 1934-35. The account by Leyens (pp. 15-54), owner of a department store in Wesel (Lower Rhine), describes early Nazi terror and his initially successful attempts to resist the boycott by means of clever sales campaigns and the loyalty of his staff and customers. Both memoirs chronicle the writers' flight from country to country and the effort to build up a new existence.
