Memoirs transcribed from taped interviews with Zuckerman conducted in 1974. Zuckerman (1915-1981) was born and raised in Vilna; he was a leader of the Hehalutz Zionist youth movement. When World War II broke out, he was sent, at first, to organize activities in Belorussia; he transferred to Warsaw in 1940. Describes in detail the experiences of himself and of his companion Zivia Lubetkin (later his wife) in maintaining the activities of Hehalutz-Dror throughout Poland under the worsening conditions of the occupation. In Warsaw, they managed to save the lives of most of the members of the movement. Describes the figures and actions of many of the Jewish personalities in the Warsaw ghetto - intellectuals (e.g. Ringelblum, Schipper, Katzenelson), members of the Judenrat, ghetto police (of whom he speaks very bitterly), his friends in the movement (e.g. Tenenbaum), and other members of the resistance (e.g. Anielewicz, Edelman). Zuckerman was the second in command of the Jewish Fighting Organization. He left the ghetto for the Aryan side just six days before the uprising, in order to organize support and arms for the ghetto, in which he failed. After the uprising, he and other survivors of the resistance (e.g. Lubetkin, Edelman) went into hiding and later participated in the Warsaw uprising in 1944.
