Asserts that the postulated dialogue between Christians and Jews can not be carried out without a better knowledge of Jewish history and of the sufferings and hopes of the Jewish people. Traces the history of Christian antisemitism from the 4th century to the Holocaust. Underlines the contribution of Christian antisemitism to the mass extermination of the Jews during the Second World War. States that the Christian attitude towards Jews throughout history was oppressive, and that the Church should ask for pardon. Examines the causes for the attitude which still denies or postpones this act of expiation.
