Les kapos d'Auschwitz

Memoirs of a Jew who was born in Tarnów in 1910. At some point he went to fight in the Spanish Civil War, and later in the French Résistance. Here he recounts his experiences in Auschwitz between 1942-45 through portrayal of several kapos who he encountered there. Only one of the kapos, "Camarade Berger", was Jewish, and known to Liblau from Warsaw, where they had both been active in the communist movement. Berger, however, had changed beyond recognition and turned into a brutal Nazi collaborator. Liblau describes the horrors of the camp in detail, and the role of the kapos in upholding or alleviating the horrors. Liblau was taken on a death march in January 1945; he was liberated in Ebensee four months later.
