The square, formerly called the Muidergracht, built in 1861, is named after the lawyer Jonas Daniel Meijer (1780-1884).Next to the gate, at No. 6, was the headquarters of the synagogue council of the Jewish religious community. At No. 8 was located Van Crevel and Co.'s bookstore and publisher of the Central bald for the Israelites in the Netherlands.In addition, at No. 12, in the advertising text on the facade, was located Van Oosten confectionery and Sugar Powder Factory. After the last Jewish inhabitants were deported by the Nazis in September 1943, all the houses, Nos. 6-14, were turned into ruins in the hunger winter of 1944-1945, and demolished after the war. Behind the gate, to the left of the New Synagogue, now Distroyed, was the A.S. Onderwijzerhof, named after the Chief Rabbi A. S.
