- Wikipedia viewed October 20, 2016(General Samuel Jones (December 17, 1819-July 31, 1887) was a major general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Born in Powhatan County, Virginia. At Westpoint United States Military Academy from July 1, 1837 to his graduation in 1841, then later served there as assistant professor of mathematics and assistant instructor in artillery and infantry tactics from 1846-51. He was appointed assistant to the Judge Advocate of the Army at Washington and continued in the discharge of the duties of his position until he resigned his commission in the Army of the United States April 27, 1861. Joined the Provisional Confederate Army in 1861; promoted to brigadier general July 21, 1861. On January 22, 1862, appointed to command of the department of which Pensacola was the headquarters. Promoted to major general on March 10, 1862. Between September 1862 and May 1865, he held the commands successively of the Departments of East Tennessee, of Western Virginia, of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and of Florida and South Georgia. From 1873 to 1875, Jones served as president of the Maryland Agricultural College. Died in Bedford Springs, Virginia; buried in Hollywood Cemetary in Richmond, Virginia)
