Britannica online, May 13, 2026(Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde, PAIGC; founded in Bissau in 1956 and headed by Amílcar Cabral; Cabo Verde became fully independent on July 5, 1975, with its secretary-general, Aristides Pereira, and military commander Pedro Pires becoming the first president and prime minister; a military coup in 1980 in Guinea-Bissau broke the political unity between the two countries, and the PAIGC split, with the Cabo Verde branch thereafter known as the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (Partido Africano para a Independência de Cabo Verde, PAICV)
