השם רַפְרַף גֻּלְגֹּלֶת הַמֵּת מתייחס לכל אחד משלושת המינים (A. atropos, A. styx and A. lachesis) של פרפרים מסוג Acherontia המשתייכים למשפחת הרפרפיים. המין A. atropos מצוי בעיקר באירופה ואילו שני המינים הנוספים מצויים באסיה. השימוש הנפוץ בשם "רפרף גולגולת המת" הוא למין האירופאי. משפחת הרפרפים לעיתים נכללת כחלק מקבוצת העשים ולכן בספרות המקצועית יש המתייחסים ל"רפרף גולגולת המת" כאל "עש גולגולת המת". רפרף גולגולת המת מזוהה בקלות בעזרת עיטור צבעוני על גבו המזכיר גולגולת אדם ומכאן שמו העברי. באנגלית קרוי הרפרף Death's-head Hawkmoth.
